I'm sure that all of us can recall the misery of learning a foreign language at school. She teachers seemed to insist upon using antiquated and extremely old-fashioned methods for learning languages, the very fact that so few of us left school being able to communicate in the foreign languages they spent years trying to teach us is proof enough that it simply didn't work. Teachers and schools in those days seemed to have little understanding about how exactly the human mind learns a foreign language and indeed even today this problem still persists.

I would estimate that in the last 10 years we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of clever linguists coming out with technologies for learning languages. It seems that today we have a far or understanding of how people acquire foreign languages and become fluent in them. If you take a trip to any major bookstore and go to the languages section you are sure to find many examples of how these new approaches to learning languages such as Spanish have filtered down from mere speculation and theory into actionable systems and methods for language learning. One of the most famous of all is the Michel Thomas series of books and CDs. He radically changed people's opinions of how a language could be for and in many ways revolutionized the topic.

In school I was forced to learn Spanish, French and German. I didn't succeed in any of them. I did pass my exams however if it came to communicating with native speakers in any of those languages ordinary everyday conversation on the street I would have failed miserably. It's easy to think that you do not have the ability to learn a foreign language to a fluent level like others do. While it is true that some people have a natural talent for acquiring languages what is most important for success is that you are taught correctly. This is something which feels tremendously exciting to do. It feels like you have a realistic chance of overcoming the challenge because you can see very clearly a step by step ladder to climb.

When learning Spanish I always regarded Spanish vocabulary as being the worst and most difficult part to do. When you are faced with having to repeat things around and around and having some kind of blind faith that somehow they are going to stick to become part of your permanent memory only to discover that a tiny fraction of them actually stick after a couple of weeks you soon lose faith become discouraged and demotivated. There are however new ways of acquiring Spanish vocabulary which dramatically improved the rate of retention of those new words. It involves using mental images and cartoon films in your mind in order to create road maps back to those memories and the words. This technique massively improves the percentage of words you'll remember even weeks off to you first learn them.

There is one course in particular which I am excited about learning. It teaches you how to take 1000's of words you already know in English and instantly convert them into Spanish using some very simple conversion rules. So what happens is that English words get grouped together according to their endings, these entire groups of words are then easily converted into perfect Spanish by simply performing one simple conversion rule.

A major problem when learning to express yourself in Spanish is that most of us are afraid of making mistakes. it can be a daunting cost to stand in front of native Spanish speakers and express your thoughts and feelings without making a fool of yourself grammatically. For this reason confidence is of enormous importance but it is one of the hardest things to acquire. A big factor in feeling confident about your Spanish is to feel very secure about your command of vocabulary and your ability to formulate sentences which are currently structured.
